This group exhibition featured selected works of time-based media from the Indigenous Art Centre collection at Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada (CIRNAC), and a newly commissioned installation by Anishinaabe artist, Aylan Couchie. Originally presented at Gallery 101 artist-run centre in Ottawa, Ontario from August to September 2024, this exhibition was programmed for the 13th annual Asinabka Film and Media Arts Festival, in partnership with the Indigenous Curatorial Collective.
When Is Future? When Is Now? is a celebration of Indigenous filmmaking and the familiar comforts of video store visits and movie-watching. Together, we gathered memories of our experiences and sought to recreate spaces where we felt safe, seen and empowered as Native people. Through our curatorial approach, we sought to highlight works that centered Indigenous self-representation in diverse ways. This immersive exhibition reimagines the gallery space as a Native-run video rental store and our aunties’ livingrooms, where audiences are encouraged to participate with the works and engage in their display through sight, sound, touch and memory.
